Boost Your Overall Well-being by Understanding The 5 Aspects Of Health

Life is a thin line that forms the edges of achievement and failure. Although we can’t see it, gravity is the always-present factor working to keep us grounded.

It’s up to your ability to focus on your goal, your steps, and your balance that determine your success rate in life.

The well-being of a person embraces the 5 aspects of health:

  • mental,
  • emotional,
  • physical,
  • social, and
  • spiritual

Health also incorporates several facets including diet, exercise, rest, etc.., and what you put into your body does matter, as does the amount of action your body gets.

What your mind consumes and processes matters as well, and the question is: How are you taking care of your health?

Model For Well-Being: The SPIRE Model

The spire model of wellbeing is a philosophy of living that teaches that, in order to be happy and healthy people, we must attend to the following five equally important aspects of our life:

  • Spiritual,
  • Physical,
  • Intellectual (mental),
  • Relational (social), and
  • Emotional

In other words, contrary to old-fashioned notions of psychology, true happiness, isn’t just about the thoughts we think, it depends on the whole. The whole here denotes:

  • how we hold our body, which in turn affects what’s happening in the cells,
  • how we connect with others, and
  • Whether we have a sense of greater purpose in our lives.

Personal health depends partly on one’s active, passive and assisted observations about his health in everyday life. From these observations, he could get information for his personal decisions and actions to take.

The SPIRE model integrates concepts and research from both positive psychology and yoga.

To achieve an enviable state of whole-person well-being, we must find ways to nurture growth, inspiration, and pleasure in all five SPIRE dimensions.

The Linkages Between The 5 Aspects Of Health

Mental Health

  • A mentally healthy person is able to concentrate on a task for an extended period of time.
  • A mentally healthy person is alert, able to listen and think.
  • The way a person thinks and provides a solution to situations also indicates his intellectual/mental health.
  • Mental health also entails creativity, general knowledge, and common sense.
  • Mental health also involves a person’s ability to make sound decisions, which is so important to a person’s health and wellbeing.

You can become mentally healthy by learning from your environment and the people around you. If there is something you want to know more about, learn about it firsthand, and then try it yourself.

Playing mind games can add to your mental skills, and reading or taking special classes can also stimulate your mental health.

Albert Einstein concentrated for ten years to formulate his general theory of relativity, and Michelangelo concentrated for more than two years just to finish his now famous painting on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel.

Emotional Health

According to research, the quality of a person’s health defines the person’s emotions. What he feels towards self, other people and situations around him determine his emotional health.

Emotional health refers to the following:

  • a person’s way of handling success as well as defeat,
  • a person’s way of coping with everyday problems and stress, and
  • The management of his study, work, and other activities.

An emotionally healthy person is in control of his thoughts, feelings, and behavior, and he thus feels good about himself and has good relationships with others.

According to experts, people with good emotional health have a lower rate of stress-related diseases like headaches, ulcers, migraines, stomachaches, asthma, etc.

Physical Health

  • A physically healthy person is active,
  • He does not get tired easily, and does not get sick easily,
  • He is strong and full of energy.

Physical health refers to the condition (framework) of the body and the way it reacts to illnesses. You need to take good care of your body in order to keep it in a good physical health.

You will also need to eat nutritious food, exercise, and get enough sleep and rest.

Social Health

Social health refers to the effective way a person performs his role in life as a friend, son, daughter, neighbor, or citizen of a society. It involves a person’s ability to perform his responsibilities and to maintain good relationships with others.

Giving love and respect for others is an important factor of social health, and a socially healthy person makes friends, associates, and network easily. He also keeps them. He is considerate and kind to others and hardly quarrels with others.

Social health also involves cooperating and working with others whenever a task needs to be done.

Spiritual Health

This refers to a person’s belief in God, sense of values, morality, and his ability to exercise what he believes is right.

Spirituality in this sense goes beyond religion. It’s an important energy in your life that shapes your values, humility, purpose, treatment of others, treatment of self, and the acknowledgment that there is a power beyond what you are personally capable of generating.

A person’s religious faith also contributes to his health and well-being, and to maintain good health, you need to recognize all the aspects of health and to keep them in balance so that they work best for you.

Health is the complete physical, mental, emotional, social, and spiritual well-being of a person, and does not only mean the absence of an ailment or disease.

Health is a condition in which all the five aspects work in a complete and all-inclusive way.

The interaction between body, mind, spirit, family, friends, community, education, job, and beliefs determine the health of an individual.
